Aside from the Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Contest and the Asian Intercities Teenagers’ Mathematics Olympiad, this summer saw several members of the 2005 Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Delegation to International Mathematics Competitions compete in other international mathematics competitions abroad. Though the MTG is not the organization who facilitated the country’s participation in some of these contests, the MTG family still wishes to commend its students for making the country proud.
2005 Sakamoto Mathematics World Competition (SMWC)
Sponsored by the Sakamoto Educational Systems, the 2005 SMWC was held last April 30 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Philippine contingent to this event, which was chosen through a qualifying examination facilitated by our local Sakamoto Method Mathematics Center, featured MTG Kid Aldric Cristoval Reyes (Grade 5, Chiang Kai Shek College). Reyes went on to achieve first place in his grade level, against representatives from Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand.
Reyes was then later on selected to the sixty-six-member Philippine team to the 2005 PEMIC, where he won a gold medal in the individual competition and a silver medal for the team competition.
3rd Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO)Mathematical Olympiad
For the first time in the history of the Philippines’ participation in the SEAMEO, the MTG was tapped to form the team that would represent the country in this biennial meet. Our students responded quite well, bringing home a silver and a bronze medal in the individual contest, en route to a fourth place over-all finish in this event held last May 16 to May 20. John Henri Ma (4th year, Trinity Christian School Bacolod) won the silver, while John Garret Go (th year, St. Stephen’s High School) nabbed the bronze. The other members of the four-strong Philippine contingent are Abegail Ceralde (3rd year, Zamboanga Chung Hua High School) and Nellie Margaret Chua (2nd year, Chiang Kai Shek College). They are pitted against a field of nine other Southeast Asian nations namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
All four were then selected to be among the fifty-two MTG Kids who comprised our AITMO delegation. Ma won a gold in both the individual and team competitions, while Chua bagged silver in both. Go and Ceralde both took home bronze medals from the individual contest, with Go taking a silver in the team contest and Ceralde getting a bronze in it.
2005 Asia-Pacific Mathematics Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS)
Held last May 26 to 28 in Singapore, and coinciding with the final days of the PEMIC, the 2005 APMOPS featured more than one hundred participants from Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Five MTG Kids qualified for the supposed eight-member Philippine delegation to this event, which was chosen based on a qualifying examination facilitated by the Ateneo de Manila High School Department. They are Aldric Reyes, Vance Eldric Go (Grade 4, St. Jude Catholic School), Carmela Antoinette Lao (Grade 4, St. Jude Catholic School), Emiliano Tan (Grade 5, Philippine Academy of Sakya), and Zi Xin Zhang (Grade 5, Grace Christian High School). However, only four of them went to Singapore as Tan had to back out before the contest. In the contest itself, Go won a Gold Medallion for ranking within the 11th to 40th place among all finalists. Meanwhile, Lao received a Platinum Award for placing within the top two percent among all of those who took the uniform qualifying exam.
All five participated in the PEMIC, with the four who went on to participate in the APMOPS not being able to be at hand to receive their medals during the PEMIC Awarding Ceremonies. Apart from Reyes, Lao won a silver medal in the individual and a gold medal in the team competition. Her team, Metro Manila, then went on to place 2nd in the over-all standings. Go won a silver in the individual contest and a bronze in the team contest. Zhang won a bronze in the individual and a silver in the team contest. Finally, Tan received a silver medal in the individual contest and a bronze medal in the team contest.
2005 American Regions Mathematics League (ARML)
Finally, as of this writing fifteen MTG Kids from the secondary level are in San Jose, California, duking it out in the 2005 American Regions Mathematics League. The MTG facilitated the country participation to this event. Among the fifteen, eleven competed in the AITMO and most of them were not around anymore as well, by the time the awarding ceremonies were being held. They are:
