Six former and present day MTG kids recently brought pride and honor to the Philippines after representing the country in the 46th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held last July 8 to 19, 2005 in Mérida, Yucatán, México. They brought home a total of three Honorable Mention Awards from this event - one of the country's better performances in recent memory. Former MTG Kids Charles William Ang, Jon Garret Go, and John Henri Ma bagged the Honorable Mention Awards for the country. They are now college freshmen in the Ateneo de Manila University, all taking up Management Engineering. Also representing the Philippines in this competition are Elvis Chua (1st year college, Ateneo), Gian Jefferson Chua (4th year, Uno High School), and Daniel Andrew Tan (3rd year HS, Grace Christian High School). The Philippines emerged 68th out of 91 countries in the over-all standings. China, the United States, and Russia took the top three spots, in that order. Five hundred and ninety-three of the world's best mathematical minds in the secondary level (as of last school year) participated in this year's Olympiad, living up to the IMO's name of being the most prestigious international mathematics competition in the world. This year's participation is also the largest in its history. The selection and the participation of the Philippine participants to this event were facilitated by the Program for Excellence in Mathematics (PEM) of the ADMU Math Department. The Philippines has been fielding teams to the IMO for nearly two decades, through the PEM. Students who were selected to be part of recent Philippine delegations to this event have mostly been MTG Kids. This year is no different, with all six of them being part of the 2005 MTG Philppine Delegation to International Mathematics Competitions. The MTG played a huge role in the training of these students. A highlight of this was having famed Chinese IMO coach Professor Gangsong Leng train some of the MTG's top students during the past two summers in Zamboanga City. |
