Sixteen members of the 2005 Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philppine Delegation to International Mathematics Competitions for the Primary Level recently brought pride and honor to the country after representing it in the Po Leung Kuk 9th Primary Mathematics World Contest, held last July 16 to 21, 2005 in Hong Kong. They brought home with them a host of awards, including the country's highest-ever performance in the team competition.

Team Metro Manila - composed of Aileen Giselle Chua (1st year, Grace Christian High School), Carmela Antoinette Lao (Grade 5, St. Jude Catholic School), Aldric Cristoval Reyes (Grade 6, Chiang Kai Shek College), and Vance Mikhail Uy (1st year, St. Jude, Catholic School) - emerged as the first runner-up in their bracket of eleven teams in the team competition. This is the highest finish posted by a Philippine team in the history of its participation in this contest.

Meanwhile, Team Luzon - composed of Earl John Chua (1st year, Grace Christian High School), Ervin Frederick Dy (1st year, Chiang Kai Shek College), Dann Julius Tan (1st year, Chiang Kai Shek College), and Marquis Alexander Tan (Grade 7, Xavier School) - bagged a Merit Award, also in the team event, for finishing among the top teams just outside the top three in their own bracket.

In the individual competition, Carmela Lao lead the Philippine team's performance by posting a silver medal finish in this event. At grade 5, this makes her the first Philippine representative ever to this contest to achieve silver medal status this early.

Six Philippine representatives also earned bronzes in the individual event to round up the country's achievements in this competition. They are Aileen Chua, Ervin Dy, Marquis Tan, Vance Uy, Rigel Stewart Espiritu (1st year, San Beda College, Alabang), and Patrick Adrian Ong (1st year, St. Jude Catholic School).

Other Philippine representatives to this competition are Elvis Jeremy Ayroso (Grade 6, St. Jude Catholic School), Geraldine Baniqued (Grade 7, St. Jude Catholic School), Kenneth Co (Grade 4, Xavier School), Marc Terrence Co (Grade 6, Xavier School), Brendon Matthew Go (Grade 4, Xavier School), and Jillian Krystel Sy (1st year, Chiang Kai Shek College).

Accompanying the Philippine delegation throughout this event were MTG Executive Vice President Mrs. Rechilda P. Villame, MTG Treasurer Mrs. Sanet S. Hipolito, MTG Office Director Mr. Roberto J. Degulacion, MTG Ex-Officio Mrs. Sylvia C. Ortiz, Mr. Genesis Camarista (MTG Training Center, Ilo-Ilo City), Mrs. Cynthia Gayya (Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute Web Info Group), and Mr. Leo Laparan (Manila Bulletin).

The Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest is an annual mathematics competition that is always held in Hong Kong. It is hosted by Po Leung Kuk, a social service organization that is based there. One hundred and sixty-eight primary level students (as of the previous school year), representing 44 city-teams, participated in this year's contest. They come from fifteen different countries and territories, namely Australia, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, USA, and the Philippines. This is also the ninth time, in as many stagings, that the country has sent a delegation to this contest.

The sixteen Philippine representatives to this contest were among the nearly one hundred primary level students who made it past the MTG's rigorous yearlong training and selection process of the country's top young mathematical minds. Early this year, fourteen of them were among the 66 Philippine representatives when the country hosted the 2005 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Competition last May 23 to 27, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Another Philippine delegation is set out to compete in an international math contest in the coming weeks. A 38-member squad will go to Tai-an City in Shandong, China for the 2005 China Primary School Mathematics Olympiad from August 8 to 14.
