MTG Kids Bag Bronzes in China Math Olympiad for Girls

Four members of the 2005 Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philippine Delegation to International Mathematics Competitions for the Secondary Level recently brought pride and honor to the Philippines after representing the country and bagging a haul of two bronze medals and two excellence awards in the 2005 China Mathematics Olympiad for Girls, held last August, 2005 in Chang Chung, China.

Both Abegail Ceralde (4th year, Zamboanga Chung Hua High School) and Joanna Jane Tan (3rd year, Jubilee Christian Academy) bagged bronze medals, while Nellie Margaret Chua (3rd year, Chiang Kai Shek College) and Melissa Janelle Dy brought home excellence awards.

MTG Vice President for Training and Development Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz and Mrs. Josephine Lorenzo Tan of Grace Christian High School accompanied the Philippine delegation to this event.

The China Mathematics Olympiad for girls is a national mathematics competition for secondary level girls. More than 200 participants coming from the Phillipines, Russia, Hong Kong, Macau, and 21 Chinese provinces participated in this year's Olympiad. The Philippines has been participating as a guest participant to this competition since 2002.

Ceralde, Tan, Chua, and Dy were among the nearly eighty secondary level students who made it past the MTG's rigorous yearlong training and selection process of the country's top young mathematical minds. Other secondary level competitions that the MTG Kids participated in early this year were the 2005 Asian Intercities Teenagers' Mathematics Olympiad in Bohol last May, the 2005 American Regions Mathematics League in San Jose, California last June, the 2nd China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad in Fuzhou, China last July, the Kaohsiung 6th Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition in Taiwan this August, and the 2005 China Junior High School Mathematics Olympiad in Shandong, China, also this August.
