MTG Kids Compete in Kaohsiung

Sixteen members of the 2005 Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philppine Delegation to International Mathematics Competitions for the Secondary Level recently brought pride and honor to the country after representing it in the Kaohsiung 6th Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition, held last August 2 to 5, 2005 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. They brought home with them two bronze medals from the competition.

Emmanuel Plan from Ateneo de Manila University High School and Mark Benedict Tan from Xavier School were the top Filipino participants in this competition. They received bronze medals for their performance in the individual event.

Other Philippine representatives to this competition were Alvin Belleza from Ateneo de Manila, Christopher Bhojwani, Emerson Escolar, and Daniel Andrew Tan - all from Grace Christian High School, Kyna Elyse Cheu of Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, Francesca Choi and Melissa Dy - both from Chiang Kai Shek College, Washington Co from Oro Grace Christian School, Jeffrey Go and Arnold Lindros Lau - both from Xavier School, Chiara Rosario Lanuza from Philippine Science High School, Calvin Bernard Lim from St. Stephen's High School, Luke Wicent Sy from Hope Christian High School, and Raymond Tan from Jubilee Christian Academy.

The Filipino team leaders and deputy team leaders in the Taiwan competition were MTG Vice–President for Training & Development Dr. Eduardo dela Cruz Jr., MTG executive director Mr. Roberto J. Degulacion; MTG secretary Eugenia Guerra, Mr. Isidro Aguilar, education supervisor of Taguig and Pateros; Virginia Penafuerte, Las Pinas division superintendent; Jose Manresa Espanol and Ciedelle Purificacion Yu-hico of Philippine Science High School (Main Campus).

This year's competition drew the participation of 136 secondary level students, representing 34 city-teams. They come from eleven different countries and territories, namely the Philippines, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The IWYMIC is an annual mathematics competition for secondary level students. This was the third time that Kaohsiung hosted this competition. It previously hosted this competition's first two stagings in 1999 and 2000. Afterwards, it made stops in Tagaytay, Philippines (2001), Lucknow, India (2002), and Macau (2004). This is also the sixth time, in as many stagings, that the country has sent a delegation to this contest.

The sixteen Philippine representatives to this contest were among the nearly eighty secondary level students who made it past the MTG's rigorous yearlong training and selection process of the country's top young mathematical minds. Other secondary level competitions that the MTG Kids participated in early this year were the 2005 Asian Intercities Teenagers' Mathematics Olympiad in Bohol last May, the 2005 American Regions Mathematics League in San Jose, California last June, and the 2nd China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad in Fuzhou, China last July.
