The Mathematics Trainer's Guild, Philippines, on its official website, recently announced the results of the 2006 Canadian Mathematics Competition (CMC), held last February.

Our wards did quite well in this year's CMC, even emerging as the top international team in one of it's contests. MTG ranked 1st among 40 foreign teams in the Cayley Contest, which is for Grade 10 students. It also fared strongly in the other contests, finishing 2nd among 37 in the Fermat Contest (Grade 11), and 8th among 36 in the Pascal Contest (Grade 9).

What's even more impressive is the fact that the MTG Kids participated in the contests supposed to be allocated for higher grade levels. Elementary MTG Kids (from Gr. 3 to 6) took the Pascal Contest, 1st and 2nd yr. high school students took the Cayley Contest, and 3rd and 4th yr. high school students took the Fermat Contest.

Four MTG Kids garnered medals for topping their respective divisions. They are Michael Brodeth (Gr. 4, Colegio San Agustin, Binan) and Matthew Ng (Gr. 5, Chiang Kai Shek College) for the Pascal Contest, Patrick Adrian Ong (1st yr., St. Jude Catholic School) for the Cayley Contest, and Raymon Tan (4th yr., Jubilee Christian Academy) for the Fermat Contest.

The Canadian Mathematics Competition is an international correspondence-type competition. Meaning, it is a contest wherein the questionnaires are sent to and answered in the respective countries of the participants, while the answers are sent back and processed to the home base of the competition (in this case, Canada). The CMC is just one of several international correspondence-type competitions that trainees of the MTG Mathematics Challenge for Filipino Kids Training Program are automatically qualified to participate in. Other contests of the same nature include: the Australian Mathematics Competition, the American Mathematics Competition, and the Mathematics Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools - USA.

For more information of the CMC, you could check their official website of the Centre of Education in Mathematics and Computing of the University of Waterloo here. The MTG announcement can be found here.
