The Mathematics Trainers' Guild started its international campaign for the schoolyear 2006-2007 on a good note, with a rousing performance at the 2006 Indonesia Elementary Mathematics Intercity Competition. Sixteen elementary MTG Kids made the country proud as they brought home one gold, one silver, and three bronzes, on top of other awards, in this annual competition held last May 27 to 31 at Bali, Indonesia.

Amiel Sy, a Grade 5 student from Jubilee Christian Academy, bagged a gold medal from the individual competition. He earned the award after getting all fifteen problems in the individual test correctly.

Also earning medals from the Philippines were: Audrey Celine Lao (Gr. 4, St. Jude Catholic School) who got a silver; and Neil Benjamin Kho (Gr. 4, San Beda College, Alabang), Henry Jefferson Morco (Gr.4, Chiang Kai Shek College), and Gisel Ong (Gr. 6, Grace Christian High School), who all got bronzes. Silvers were awarded to those who made just one mistake, while bronzes were given to those who made two.

The rest of the delegation got Merit Awards. They are Neil Patrick Angeles (Gr. 6, Colegio San Agustin, Binan), Adrian Rafael Co (Gr, 6, Xavier School), Kenneth Co (Gr. 4, Xavier), Jessica Marie Gamboa (Gr. 6, St. John's Institute - Bacolod), Sed Anderson Holaysan (Gr. 6 , Bethany Christian School, Cebu). Miguel Sebastian Santos (Gr. 5, PAREF Southridge School), Adrian Paul Tan (Gr. 6, Hope Christian High School), Keefe Collin Tan (Gr. 4, St. Jude Catholic School), Rei Cid Romar Ual (Gr. 6, Mary Help of Christian School, Laguna), Joseph Darwin Young (Kong Hua School, Cagayan de Oro), and Lawrence Albert Yusay (Gr. 6, Westbridge School, Iloilo). Merit awardees were those who didn't place in the medal standings but still finished among the top two-thirds of the participants.

In the team competition, Team Metro Manila - composed of Kenneth Co, Audrey Lao, Henry Morco, and Miguel Santos - bagged a 2nd place trophy. Teams Visayas (Neil Angeles, Adrian Co, Jessica Gamboa, and Rei Cid Ual) and Mindanao (Neil Kho, Amiel Sy, Keefe Tan, and Lawrence Yusay) followed suit with a 3rd place trophy each.

For the puzzles competition, Teams Metro Manila and Visayas bagged 2nd place trophies, while Teams Luzon (Sed Holaysan, Gisel Ong, Adrian Tan, and Joseph Young) and Mindanao got 3rd.

Heading the Philippine delegation to the 2006 InaEMIC was no less than MTG President Dr. Simon L. Chua. With him were Mrs. Ruby Cristobal of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute, MTG Vice President for Training and Development Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz, and MTG Las Pinas Center Coordinator Mrs. Eugenia Guerra.

The EMIC is a relatively young international mathematics competition for elementary students. Only on its fourth year, it changes venues from year to year. The EMIC previously made stops in Thailand (2003), India (2004), and even the Philippines last year. It draws participation mainly from Asia-Pacific countries. This year, participants to this event came from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, and Thailand.

This is also the fourth time that the MTG has sent a delegation to participate in the EMIC. During last year's edition, the MTG had what was arguably its best performance in an international competition to date. Riding on our home-field advantage and the fact that the MTG was celebrating its 10th Anniversary that year, the MTG Kids went on to bag six individual gold medals, two team gold medals, and a 2nd place over-all finish for one of the teams.

The InaEMIC is just the first of many international mathematics competitions that the MTG is going to participate in this year. In fact, as of this writing, 30 high school MTG Kids are in Las Vegas, Nevada competing in the American Regions Math League. For elementary students, the next competition is this coming July in Hong Kong, where a different set of sixteen elementary MTG Kids are off to compete in the Po Leung Kuk 10th Primary Mathematics World Competition.
